Trigger Warning: Mention of Tumbler Ridge mass shooting

We are deeply saddened by the devastating events and loss of life at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School that have brought pain, loss, and grief to the community of Tumbler Ridge. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims, families who have lost loved ones, and to the students, educators and community members impacted by this tragedy.

We recognize that events of this nature can have a profound impact, not only to those in Tumbler Ridge, but also on those outside of the community and that our members may be affected by this tragedy in many ways, directly or indirectly.

To our members, you might feel overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted, sad, angry or confused. There is no right or wrong way to feel. It is a difficult time, but one that you don’t have to face alone.

Schools are places to learn and build community safely. They serve as a means of connection, especially in close-knit communities like Tumbler Ridge. When a senseless act of violence occurs in any school, students, families, educators and staff at every school or campus feel the effects. The tragedy will immensely change how we walk through our lives. Now, more than ever, we need to be persistent on prioritising safety, community and compassion for one another at our campuses and schools.

We acknowledge that the words in this statement will be inadequate to express the magnitude of the loss and trauma that has occurred. We are holding Tumbler Ridge in our hearts.

The Federation stands in solidarity with all who have been affected and will do our best to proactively contribute to the healing of the community and provide resources to our members. Checking in with and taking care of each other in difficult times is important.
