Students in British Columbia strongly denounce the recent decision by the University of Ottawa to interfere in the affairs of the undergraduate students’ union. The decision to cease collecting and remitting membership dues to the undergraduate students’ union is an obvious and aggressive attempt to undermine the autonomy and effectiveness of the union.
However, this position should not be confused with support for nor acceptance of the alleged actions of some officials of the union. The individual student members can and should avail themselves of their democratic rights in order to address these allegations and to establish proper internal controls.
The BC Federation of Students unreservedly offers its support and assistance to University of Ottawa students in protecting their autonomy and rights to organize.
